Magazines, Books as Gifts
from:Sometimes it doesn’t seem to matter how well you think you know a person, finding the right gift just seems to be escaping you. It can be even worse when you don’t know the person well at all. We have all been roped into buying a present for a fellow club member, or a co worker, not to mention the boss, and having no idea what is appropriate. You could go with the old standby of scented candles and soaps, but for one, the person will know you didn’t try very hard and two, men aren’t usually very excited by those things. Gift cards also scream “I bought the first impersonal thing that came to mind.” The next time you find yourself in a position where you don’t know what to get consider the gift of magazines or books. Before you roll your eyes and go get a gift card, think about the possibilities.
Let’s say you have baby shower or wedding coming up. Of course the two events aren’t the same things, but they do have the similarities of being an important milestone and there are all kinds of magazines and books on both subjects. For the parents to be, a book about the first few years of the little one’s life would be appropriate. You could also choose a touching book of poems or stories about parenthood. On the other end of the spectrum, weddings can hard to shop for as well, especially if you don’t know the bride and groom well. Instead of sending the standard toaster, think about magazines and books about how to make a marriage work or one on the subject of couple friendly activities. They will likely appreciate it more than a kitchen appliance.
Time to think about the co worker or acquaintance on your list. You might be thinking that there is no way you can buy magazines or books for a person you barely know. If you stop and think just for a second, there is a good chance that in casual conversation you were given a hint of likes or dislikes. Maybe your neighbor mentioned that he loves to fly fish, or your co worker loves her morning coffee. A subscription to a fly fishing magazine would be a nice gesture. For the lady, a coffee table book on coffee would be a cute tongue in cheek gift. This whole gift giving thing wasn’t as hard as you thought.
No matter whom the recipient is or how little you think you know about them, magazines and books can be a thoughtful gift for the most daunting of occasions.
