Canadian Newspapers

from:

Canadian Newspapers are widely distributed throughout many areas in a means to keep the residents informed of current local and world-wide events. Although there doesn't seem to be as many Canadian newspapers in Canada as what other countries and states seem to have, their distribution area is large and they're highly regarded in their regions. Some of the more common Canadian newspapers are Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Le Journal de Montréal, La Presse, Toronto Sun, National Post, Vancouver Sun, The Gazette, Winnipeg Free Press, The Province, Edmonton Journal, Calgary Herald, Le Soleil, Hamilton Spectator, The Chronicle-Herald and Le Journal de Québec.

One of the Canadian newspapers with the highest rate of circulation is the Toronto Star, a daily newspaper. This is surprising to many because the majority of its edition is distributed throughout the province of Ontario. Owned by Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd., the Toronto Star has been around since 1892, although it was first called The Evening Star and then The Toronto Daily Star. When it first started, the circulation wasn't very prosperous until Joseph "Holy Joe" Atkinson took over as editor in 1899, a position he held until his death in 1948.

What many believe what made this paper so successful was the views Atkinson had about certain subjects regarding the interests of the public such as health care, unemployment compensation, old age pensions, etc., as well as his fairness and courage in publishing these articles to make people aware of these issues. Because of his acute and excellent business skills, Atkinson also became the major shareholder of The Star. Although it was originally called the Toronto Daily Star, the name was changed in 1971 to the Toronto Star.

Of all the Canadian newspapers, the Star is the only one that has a public editor in its employment. Other special features of the Star are its letters from readers, which fills a whole page each day, the color comics, results of online polls and annual employee competitions each year.
The Globe and Mail is another of the popular Canadian newspapers even though it's a Canadian English language. It's called by many the newspaper of record in Canada. Through its merger with the Toronto Empire and The Toronto Mail, it now has a huge circulation rate. It was from this merger that the name The Globe became changed to The Globe and Mail. The Globe and Mail is a morning newspaper that's printed in different editions for Montreal, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary, Brandon, Vancouver and Manitoba. The Web site, globeinvestor.com got its start from the Globe and Mail, which is also a daily newspaper.
